Become an A-Town Coach
Being a coach with Aurora (A-Town) Special Olympics is about so much more than knowing the rules of a sport.
As a coach, you become a leader, teacher, referee, umpire, mentor, encourager, and one of the biggest cheerleaders our athletes will have—both on and off the playing field.
Yes, you’ll teach athletes how to throw a ball, make a pass, swim a stroke, roll a strike, serve a volleyball, or cross a finish line. You’ll help them understand the rules, develop their skills, prepare for competition, and learn how to work as a team.
But somewhere along the way, you’ll discover that coaching is rarely just about the sport.
- Sometimes coaching looks like staying a few extra minutes after practice because an athlete needs someone to talk to about their day.
- Sometimes it’s giving a hug to an athlete who just lost someone they love.
- Sometimes it’s celebrating a personal best like they just won a gold medal.
- Sometimes it’s reminding an athlete who is struggling that you still believe in them.
- And sometimes it’s making sure someone gets home safely because they didn’t want to take the bus alone.
The time you invest as an A-Town coach doesn’t always end when practice does. The relationships you build, the confidence you help create, and the encouragement you provide can follow an athlete throughout their life.
You don’t have to be a professional athlete or know everything about a sport to make a difference. You need to be willing to show up, learn, encourage, listen, and believe in our athletes. We’ll help you with the sport—the heart you bring is what matters most.
Our athletes will certainly learn from you, but don’t be surprised when you realize how much you are learning from them, too.

Long after the practices are over, the competitions have ended, and the medals have been put away, an athlete may still remember the coach who showed up, believed in them, challenged them, listened to them, and reminded them they mattered.
